The Sacrifice Story Behind the Billion Views
“Sacrifice” was released in 1989 as the second single from Sleeping with the Past, Elton John’s twenty-second studio album, written with his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin and produced by Chris Thomas. The ballad is about holding a marriage together and staying faithful, and its refrain turns on the image of “two hearts living in two separate worlds” before landing on the insistence that “it’s no sacrifice at all.”
On its first run, the song peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album reached No. 23 on the Billboard 200. In Britain it went further: a 1990 reissue pairing “Sacrifice” with “Healing Hands” became the first solo UK number one of his career, a peak his own channel’s notes for the video still single out.
A Video Built Like a Short Film
The video was directed by Alek Keshishian and filmed in Los Angeles in 1989, per the description on Elton John’s official channel. It stars Canadian model Yasmeen Ghauri and singer Chris Isaak as a married couple raising a young daughter, and it follows the lyric closely: the relationship breaks down in stages, the couple separates, and the father raises his daughter on his own.
Keshishian went on to direct Madonna’s Truth or Dare, and that cinematic build is part of why this clip keeps travelling. It plays as a short film rather than a performance video, so new viewers keep arriving at the song through the story on screen, decades after the single’s chart run ended.
Why Sacrifice Ran Ahead of the Catalogue
Billboard notes that the “Sacrifice” video bests his other clips by a huge margin, which makes it an unlikely leader of the club for an artist who also owns “Rocket Man”, “Your Song” and “Tiny Dancer”. One modern on-ramp is “Cold Heart”, the 2021 Pnau remix with Dua Lipa, which wove elements of “Sacrifice” into a new hit and sent a younger audience back to the originals.
The milestone lands in the streaming afterlife of a live career that has now closed. The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour ran more than five years and over 330 shows from September 2018, ending in Stockholm in July 2023 before final Mexico City dates last month. With the road behind him at 79, the catalogue is doing the touring now, and “Sacrifice” is leading it.
