Cordae And Paak Top Rap Albums

By No Excuse
Share

Cordae and Anderson .Paak have earned their first number one on the Top Rap Albums chart with Heavy Is the Crown. The collaborative album, released on October 23, 2026 through Apeshit, Mass Appeal Records and Empire Distribution, opened with 30,000 equivalent album units in the United States, enough to top the rap chart and land at No. 2 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 11 on the Billboard 200.

iimiTV covered the album’s release on October 23 in Anderson Paak And Cordae Release Joint Album. This post owns the follow-up story: the chart week itself, which turns a well received collaboration into the biggest commercial opening of Cordae’s career and a career first for both artists at the top of a Billboard genre chart.

Heavy Is the Crown number one caps a seven year build

The pairing has been assembling in public since 2019, when the two first teamed up on RNP, a standout from Cordae’s debut album The Lost Boy. They returned on Two Tens and again on Summer Drop, each record leaning on the same chemistry: .Paak’s drumming, singing and sideways humour set against Cordae’s precise, old soul rapping. A full album was the obvious end point, and Heavy Is the Crown is that end point, eleven tracks in about thirty one minutes, with no wasted space.

The production bench explains the album’s shape. J. Cole and 9th Wonder lead the credits, with additional contributions from Swizz Beatz and Conductor Williams. The lead single, A Good Day, reimagines Bill Withers’ Lovely Day with 9th Wonder production, a choice that tells you exactly where this record aims: soul first, rap craft on top, and choruses built to be sung back. It is a different lane from most rap chart toppers in 2026, which makes the number one more notable, not less.

The chart week behind Heavy Is the Crown

The figures, covering the tracking period of October 23 through October 29, show an old fashioned sales profile. Of the 30,000 equivalent album units, 19,000 came from album sales and 11,000 from streaming activity. Pure sales carrying a rap album to number one is increasingly rare in the streaming era, and it signals a fanbase that buys this pairing’s records rather than sampling them in passing. The album also opened at No. 1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart.

For Cordae, the week is a personal best. The opening surpasses the roughly 25,000 first week units of The Lost Boy in 2019, the debut that made him a Grammy nominated artist at twenty two. For .Paak, the number one arrives in the middle of one of the most decorated runs in modern R&B, after his Grammy winning work with Bruno Mars as Silk Sonic and his own solo catalogue. That neither artist had topped the Top Rap Albums chart before, across all of that success, underlines how specific this collaboration’s audience is: it took the two of them together to do it.

Airbender leads the streaming side of Heavy Is the Crown

Inside the album, Airbender has emerged as the streaming engine, collecting 2.4 million official United States on-demand streams in the opening week. The song entered the Hot Rap Songs chart at No. 21, which marks .Paak’s first appearance on that ranking and Cordae’s fourth entry. A deep cut, rather than the single, leading the streaming numbers usually means listeners are playing the album through, and it strengthens the case that this project has a longer chart life than a one week headline.

The broader picture matters too. Rap’s share of the album market has been debated all year, and 2026 has answered with heavyweight first weeks from J. Cole, Drake and Don Toliver. Heavy Is the Crown is a smaller number in a different weight class, but its composition, sales led, soul rooted, independently released through Empire, points at a durable model: two distinctive artists, one concise album, and an audience that shows up with money rather than only with clicks.

Cordae and .Paak spent seven years making this collaboration feel inevitable. The chart week makes it official. Heavy Is the Crown is a number one rap album, the first for both men, and the rare joint project that sounds like the start of a catalogue rather than a one-off experiment. If Airbender keeps climbing and the sales base keeps buying, the crown may sit there for a while.
