Tate McRae released Housewife on October 15, 2026, as the lead single from her upcoming fourth studio album. The Calgary artist paired the song with a video shot in the South of France and directed by Pierre-Ange Carlotti.
The release ends a long quiet stretch on record. Housewife is McRae first single since Nobody Girl in November 2025, following the February 2025 album So Close to What, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 177,000 album equivalent units according to Luminate figures cited in coverage of the new single. At 23, McRae is opening album four not with a feature or a soundtrack cut, but with a solo statement about money, independence and wanting a partner without needing one.
A Single Built Around Independence
The title is the misdirection. Housewife is not a song about settling into a traditional role. McRae flips the word, singing about making a lot of money and being her own housewife, picking money off the tree in her own garden and choosing a partner from a position of freedom. The chorus line that carries the idea is direct: she does not need the person beside her, she wants them, and that difference is the point of the record.
McRae described the song on The Tonight Show in words reported across multiple outlets:
I have not released in a while, and it is just kind of about a woman who cannot be contained.
She added about the shoot:
We shot the video in the south of France, and it was so magical.
The writing team behind that message is a serious pop room. Housewife was written by McRae with Julia Michaels, Ryan Tedder, Grant Boutin, Aaron Shadrow and El Guincho, with production from Ryan Tedder and Grant Boutin and additional credits for Jasper Harris in some listings. The song runs 3 minutes and 28 seconds and was released through RCA Records.
The Video In The South Of France
The video gives the lyric a visual world instead of a literal one. Shot in the South of France and directed by Pierre-Ange Carlotti, who also photographed the single artwork, it moves through a mansion, a yacht and sunlit grounds, with McRae in a red bikini and sunglasses on the cover art pushing a pram filled with cash across a manicured lawn. That pram image does the conceptual work in one frame. Domestic imagery is present, but the cash, the styling and the setting turn it into a statement about self funding and control.
Coverage of the video notes mansion and yacht scenes, a sailor cap, living room dance breaks and nods to earlier pop video language, with choreography by Sergio Reis. Appearances in the video include Thjimen Oerlemans, Ruben Moreira and Simon Loof, according to Just Jared credits. For a Canadian artist whose breakthrough videos were often built around tight choreography in enclosed spaces, the wide, bright, location driven approach marks a clear visual shift for a new album era. It presents McRae as the center of a scene, not only as a performer inside a routine.
The Easter Egg Fans Missed
The rollout had been hiding in plain sight since August. McRae closed her headlining set at Lollapalooza in Chicago after the word housewife appeared on screen at the start of the set, and she also teased the next era with a video clip of a ticking clock set to an unreleased snippet during that performance. On The Tonight Show on October 7, she laughed about the clue and the way her audience reads hints.
She said, in the quote reported by GetUrTix and Just Jared:
My fans, in particular, we drop Easter eggs all the time, and they get none of them. They will always catch on to things that are completely wrong. They never get the most obvious Easter eggs. This was literally in my Lollapalooza set. It said Housewife when the set started.
That detail matters because it shows a planned era launch, not a surprise single assembled at the last minute. Between Lollapalooza, festival sets at Osheaga, the end of the Miss Possessive Tour period and the Tonight Show appearance on October 7, McRae built a two month runway before the October 15 release date she had announced that same week.
From So Close To What To Album Four
The context behind Housewife is a fast, high level run. So Close to What produced It OK I OK, 2 Hands, Sports Car and Revolving Door, and its deluxe edition followed in November 2025 with Nobody Girl. McRae has more than 29 billion career streams according to magazine coverage of the new single, and she earned a Grammy nomination for the 2026 ceremony for Just Keep Watching from the F1 soundtrack, as noted by Melodic Magazine. She was also scheduled to perform Housewife live for the first time at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show on October 18, three days after release, giving the single an immediate live debut on a major stage.
No release date has been announced yet for the fourth album, and Housewife should be read as an opening chapter rather than a full reveal. What it does establish is tone. The song is about financial independence, the video is about scale and freedom, and the rollout is about an artist confident enough to hide the title in front of thousands of people and wait for them to catch up. For Canadian pop, that is a major moment. A Calgary artist is leading a global pop rollout on her own terms, with a new album still to come.
