Saukrates and Choclair are forming AK416, a new group that puts two foundational toronto rappers in the same crew, with new music expected in 2027. The name does the explaining on its own: it combines their given names, Amani and Kareem, with 416, the Toronto area code both men helped turn into a hip hop identity.
The news arrived tucked inside a busy autumn for Saukrates. In October he released the Fades Away (2026 Remix), featuring Drake, the late King Reign and The BLK LT$, a record iimiTV covered as a meeting of several generations of Toronto talent. AK416 is the forward-looking half of the same story. One project reaches back to honour the voices that built the scene, and the next one builds something new out of that history.

AK416 Puts Two Toronto Rappers Back In One Room
Toronto hip hop has always advanced through crews, collaborations and shared stages, and AK416 fits that tradition exactly. Saukrates, born Amani, has been writing Toronto rap history since the 1990s as a rapper, producer and songwriter, moving between solo records, production work and collaborations across generations. Choclair, born Kareem, broke through in the same era and carried the city onto national radio and video rotation at a time when Canadian rap had to fight for every inch of airtime.
Putting the two of them in one group is not a nostalgia booking. Both artists are still active, still recording and still connected to the younger artists coming up behind them. A group format gives them something a guest verse cannot: a shared catalogue, a shared stage show and a name that new listeners can find in one place.
The 416 in the name matters, too. Area-code pride is one of the oldest languages in Toronto rap, running from the earliest local classics through the modern era, and AK416 claims it directly. For toronto rappers building a group identity in 2026, leading with the city is a statement about where the music comes from before anyone hears a note.
A Busy Year Sets Up The Group
AK416 does not arrive out of nowhere. Saukrates is also preparing a collection of classic recordings that will include On The Run, his collaboration with k-os and Nelly Furtado, alongside two new original songs. That project underlines the depth of the catalogue he is working from: songs that connected Toronto rap to Canadian pop and alternative audiences long before cross-genre collaboration became the industry default.
His 2026 has added fresh recognition as well, including honours for Who’s Drivin You, his collaboration with TOBi and Jully Black, and his work with Maestro Fresh Wes on a children’s album. That range is worth pausing on. In a single year, Saukrates has touched a Drake-featured remix, a soul collaboration with two of the city’s strongest voices, and a children’s project with the godfather of Canadian hip hop. AK416 lands in the middle of that run as one more lane, not a comeback attempt.
The Fades Away remix makes the same point from the other direction. Produced by Walter Milsapp III and Xman and released through SRG-ILS on October 23, it brought Drake and King Reign together on a Saukrates record and was framed by its own release as a tribute to an important voice the city lost. An artist trusted to carry a record like that is an artist whose next move people watch.
What AK416 Can Become In 2027
The group is expected to introduce new music in 2027, which gives the rollout a long runway: the classics collection, the continued life of the Fades Away remix, and now a group announcement that Toronto audiences can sit with and anticipate. Rollouts built on real history do not need to rush. The audience for AK416 already knows both voices, and the curiosity is in the combination: two writers with different cadences, different pockets and decades of shared context, working as a unit instead of trading features.
There is a scene argument here as well. Toronto’s current wave did not appear from nothing, and every time the city’s foundational artists build something new and visible, the line from the 1990s to the present gets easier for a young listener to trace. AK416 is a group, but it is also a map.
For now, the facts are simple and worth celebrating: Saukrates and Choclair, Amani and Kareem, have formed AK416, and new music is expected in 2027. Toronto rap’s founding generation is still building, and the city gets to watch it happen in real time.
