Jonathan Osorio’s record night has a morning after, and it arrived with a league honour for the man who scored the winner, an exact playoff picture, and a Sunday trip that now decides whether the record gets a postseason attached to it. The full story of Wednesday night is in iimiTV’s breaking report on Osorio setting the MLS record in Toronto FC’s win.
FINAL: Toronto FC 2, D.C. United 1. Osorio scored in a 14th straight season for Toronto FC, an MLS single-club record, with his 64th-minute equalizer at BMO Field on Wednesday night, and Josh Sargent scored the winner in the 86th minute of the Reds’ home finale.

Sargent Lands Team Of The Matchday Honour
The first next-day development landed on Thursday, when Toronto FC announced that Josh Sargent has been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday bench for Matchday 33. It is Sargent’s team-leading fourth selection since joining the Reds in February, and it takes the club’s total to 15 Team of the Matchday selections this season. The honour was earned in the details as much as the scoreline: the club’s report notes that Sargent led Toronto in shots with four and key passes with four, posted the team’s top speed at 34.11 km/h, and has now scored in consecutive MLS matches for the first time this season.
His fingerprints were on both goals. His header from Djordje Mihailovic’s corner deflected off Osorio’s back for the equalizer, his 11th goal contribution of the season, and after Theo Corbeanu struck the post in the 86th minute, Sargent calmly guided the rebound home for his ninth goal of the year and the winner. Toronto’s full post-game media session, posted by the club’s official channel, opens with Osorio himself, followed by Sargent and head coach Robin Fraser:
Osorio’s MLS Record In Its Full Context
The Jonathan Osorio MLS record reads even larger a day later, with the league’s own history laid beside it. MLSSoccer.com’s morning-after report notes that Osorio became the first player in MLS history to score in 14 consecutive seasons with a single club, and traces the run to its start: his first Toronto FC goal came against the LA Galaxy on March 30, 2013. In between sits the most successful era in club history, the 2017 treble of MLS Cup, the Supporters’ Shield and the Canadian Championship, and a captain who has now reached 70 goals for the club and, earlier this season, 400 appearances, both firsts or near-firsts in Reds history.
Osorio refused to make the night about any of that. “No,” he told reporters when asked whether he was celebrating the milestone. “You look at it, and it’s something that for sure is to be proud of, but honestly my focus right now is trying to make the playoffs for this team. It’s great, 14 seasons, playing and being able to contribute for this club that I love; I’ve said it many times. But right now, my focus is just helping this team get into the playoffs.” MLS’s official full match highlights carry the record goal and the winner in one place:
The Playoff Picture Is Now Exact
Wednesday’s full round of results settled the table Toronto is chasing, and the shape is now precise. The top seven in the Eastern Conference go straight to Round One, while the eighth and ninth seeds meet in a one-game wild card round. Columbus Crew hold the ninth and final postseason place on 41 points. Behind them, Red Bull New York and Toronto FC sit level on 39 points, with New York City FC one back on 38, and the three teams above the line in seventh through ninth, Orlando City and FC Cincinnati on 43 and Columbus on 41, are none of them safe yet.
That makes Saturday part of Toronto’s weekend even though the Reds do not play it. Columbus host the eliminated D.C. United side Toronto just beat, and a Crew win at home would push the line further away before Toronto kicks off. NYCFC, the other chaser, host CF Montreal the same day. Toronto’s own margin is the simple part: three wins in the last five, a first playoff berth since 2020 still available, and no room left for a dropped point in either remaining game, at Atlanta on Sunday or at Philadelphia on Decision Day, November 7.
“Our fans deserve it. It’s great to win at home always, and these fans are one of the best in the league,” Osorio added on Wednesday night. “They’re amazing. The way they show up for the team, year in, year out, highs, lows, these fans deserve a competitive team. We’re doing everything we can to get this team into the playoffs and to give the fans what they deserve.”
Atlanta Test Waits On Sunday
Sunday’s opponent has nothing left to protect, which cuts both ways. Atlanta United were eliminated on Wednesday by a 2-1 loss at New York City FC, have dropped four of their last five, and sit 14th in the East on 30 points. Their danger man is identified in the Opta preview carried by SoccerNews: Breel Embolo scored Atlanta’s only goal on Wednesday with an 88th-minute header, and since the beginning of September he has scored four second-half goals while every other Atlanta player has three second-half goals combined in that span. A Toronto side that has made a habit of late goals, including both of Wednesday’s, cannot switch off late in Atlanta.
The head-to-head also warns against comfort: Atlanta won the April meeting 2-1 in Toronto, and have lost only two of the last 12 meetings between the clubs. Sargent, meanwhile, arrives as the form player of the chase, his nine goals level with Daniel Salloi for the team lead, on a club where no player has reached double figures in a regular season since Alejandro Pozuelo and Jozy Altidore in 2019. If the record night is going to become a playoff run, it starts with the captain’s team doing on the road what it did at home on Wednesday: finding a way, late if it has to be, in Atlanta on Sunday.
