White Scores 100th MLS Goal In Whitecaps Win

By No Excuse

Brian White scored his 100th goal in Major League Soccer as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat San Diego FC 4-1 on Wednesday night at BC Place. The 42nd-minute header made the 30-year-old striker the 17th player in league history to reach 100 MLS goals, and it helped Vancouver strengthen its hold on first place in the Western Conference.

FINAL: Vancouver Whitecaps 4, San Diego FC 1. Vancouver (17-8-7) leads the Western Conference with 58 points and two regular-season games left to play. San Diego (8-13-11) was eliminated from the playoff race by the loss, in front of a crowd of 21,718 at BC Place Stadium.

Brian White 100th MLS Goal: The 17th Player To Reach It

The milestone arrived two minutes before half-time. White collected his 19th goal of the season across all competitions when he directed in a header off a shot from midfielder Oliver Larraz in the 42nd minute, doubling Vancouver’s lead to 2-0 on the night and taking his Major League Soccer total to exactly 100. The Canadian Press game notes put the number in its league context: White became the 17th player in MLS history to score 100 goals. It is a list built over three decades of the league, and strikers do not reach it on one hot season. They reach it the way White has, by scoring every year, for years.

White now has 98 goals as a Whitecap across all competitions since joining the club in 2021, which means almost the entire road to 100 in the league has been travelled in a Vancouver shirt. He was not a teenage prodigy when he arrived, and the Whitecaps were not a first-place team either. Both have grown into this season together: the club sits top of the Western Conference in late October, and its striker has become one of the most reliable finishers in the league. Head coach Jesper Sorensen has described the other side of White’s game plainly: “He’s also good at helping us build up. He’s also good at taking the duels in mid-pitch.” A striker who links play, wins his duels and still finishes at this rate is why the milestone and the standings position arrived on the same night.

Cvetkovic Opens, Gauld And Caicedo Finish The Job

Vancouver had to survive the game’s first real scare before it took control. San Diego forward Cedric Bakambu had two good chances in the 14th minute: he sprinted down the field and fired a shot that goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka stopped, then collected the rebound and took a left-footed shot that defender Mathias Laborda headed away on the goal line. Ten minutes later the Whitecaps were in front. Cvetkovic, who joined Vancouver in August after three seasons in the Serbian SuperLiga, opened the scoring in the 24th minute with his first goal as a Whitecap, directing a ball Laborda sent into the centre of the box into the net with his left foot.

White’s header made it 2-0 at the break, and the second half stretched the game beyond San Diego. Ryan Gauld gave Vancouver a 3-0 lead in the 66th minute, heading in a ball shot by forward Rayan Elloumi. Bruno Caicedo scored in the 76th minute, sprinting down the field and firing a right-footed shot from the centre of the box to make it four. Onni Valakari scored on a header in the 83rd minute for San Diego’s only goal. Elloumi was sent off in stoppage time after a second yellow card, the one blemish on Vancouver’s night, and Whitecaps forward Emmanuel Sabbi missed the game with a high ankle sprain.

First Place, Muller Back, And Two Games To Hold It

The result also carried a standings gift from earlier in the day. FC Dallas lost 2-0 to the Columbus Crew, dropping four points behind the Whitecaps, so Vancouver’s win built breathing room at the top of the West rather than just defending it. The Whitecaps returned home after going 1-2-2 across five consecutive road games and played like a team glad to be back at BC Place, scoring four times and giving a returning star his first minutes in weeks. Thomas Muller substituted into the game in the 74th minute, his first appearance after missing four matches with the hamstring injury he suffered on October 6 against the Chicago Fire.

For San Diego, the night closed a door. The loss stretched the visitors’ winless streak to 10 games (0-5-5), their last win was a 3-1 decision over the LA Galaxy on August 22, and the playoff race is now over for them. Up next, San Diego visits St. Louis on Saturday, while Vancouver hosts the Seattle Sounders on Sunday with first place in the conference still in its own hands. Whatever happens in those final two games, Wednesday night at BC Place now holds a permanent line in the league’s record book: Brian White, 100 MLS goals, the 17th player ever to get there, scored in a Whitecaps win that kept his team on top of the West.
