FINAL: Texas Tech Lady Raiders 64, Charlotte 49ers 37

Stephanie Okechukwu became the tallest player in women’s college basketball history on Thursday, November 5, 2026, making her Texas Tech debut in a 64-37 season-opening win over Charlotte. Texas Tech Athletics had confirmed before tip-off that the 7-foot-1 centre’s first appearance would make her the tallest player the women’s college game has ever had, and she marked it as a starter, in 21 minutes, in front of the home crowd at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock.

A Debut Ten Months In The Making

Okechukwu signed with Texas Tech in January 2026 and then spent the rest of last season on the roster without playing a minute, waiting for the NCAA to clear her eligibility. The first ruling gave her two years, a penalty tied to the gap year she took after high school, and Texas Tech appealed for the full four so she could finish a degree in Lubbock. The answer arrived one day before the opener: on Wednesday, November 4, the NCAA granted her all four years of eligibility, and the team posted the moment associate coach Erik DeRoo told her, quoting his words to her: they granted you all four years, which means you will be here four years to get your degree. The Lady Raiders shared that clip on X the same afternoon.

The road to Lubbock was longer than the paperwork. Okechukwu is from Umunneochi, Nigeria, and played her high school basketball at Fukuchiyama Seibi in Kyoto, Japan, where she took up the game seriously. The Associated Press reported that after graduating in 2024 she split her time between an AAU league in the Philippines and training back home in Nigeria while her college future was decided. The one preview Texas Tech fans had seen was real enough: in the October 18 exhibition against Angelo State, she scored 18 points in her first outing in a Lady Raider uniform.

Ten Rebounds And A Defence That Travelled With Her

The debut line itself was a defensive stat line. Okechukwu finished with six points, a team-high 10 rebounds and three blocks, scoring her first college points at the free throw line and going 2-for-6 from the field as Charlotte crowded her catches in the post. Head coach Krista Gerlich told the AP her centre was harder on the performance than anyone in the building: “She does not think she played well. I’m excited for her and it’s only going to get better.”

The team around her made the night a rout before it could become a referendum on one player. Texas Tech led 22-9 after one quarter and 32-11 at half-time, allowing two points in the second quarter, and Charlotte’s 37 points were the fewest the Lady Raiders have allowed since 2023. Destinee Hooks led all scorers with 16 points and seven rebounds, hometown freshman Ambrosia Cole added 12 points and four steals in her own debut, and Jalayah Ingram came off the bench for nine points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Texas Tech won the glass 44-36, and Okechukwu’s four offensive rebounds were part of why the misses rarely hurt.

Three Inches Clear Of Everyone Who Came Before

The record she now holds is simple to state and hard to overstate. At 7-foot-1, Okechukwu stands three inches above the tallest players the women’s college game had previously listed: Middle Tennessee State freshman Nicole Dominguez and Eastern Illinois sophomore Abbie Boutilier, both 6-foot-10. Height records in basketball usually move by an inch at a time, shared between a small group of players at the same listing. A three-inch jump, held by one player alone, is a different kind of mark, and it changes the geometry of every game she plays in: shots altered without a block recorded, entry passes thrown higher, and a defensive plan that starts with where she is standing.

What happens next will decide how much of that geometry becomes production. Texas Tech, 1-0 and coming off a 26-8 season that returned the program to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013, continues its season-opening homestand against Lamar on Monday, November 9, at United Supermarkets Arena. Charlotte falls to 0-2. Okechukwu has four full seasons of eligibility to grow into the record she set on her first night, and Gerlich’s staff spent the opener already coaching the adjustment, working to get her the ball in better positions against a defence built to deny her. The tallest player in the history of the women’s college game is, by her own coach’s account, only at the beginning of it.
