Brewers Rays Meet In Game Five

By Rin

The Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays meet in Game 5 of the World Series on Wednesday, October 28 at Tropicana Field, with Milwaukee leading the series 3-1 after Tampa Bay’s 4-3 walk-off win in 12 innings in Game 4. First pitch is set for the evening in St. Petersburg, and the Brewers get their second chance to close out their first championship.

This preview follows the full series state, game by game, as the finals rule demands. Milwaukee won the first three games, including a rout in Game 3, and Tampa Bay answered in Game 4 with one of the great survival wins in recent World Series history. For fans searching World Series Game 5 and Brewers vs Rays Game 5, here is where the series stands and what decides it.

How Game 4 Changed The Series

Game 4 on Tuesday night finished 4-3 in 12 innings, and the final inning alone rewrote the series. Milwaukee shortstop Cooper Pratt launched a solo home run in the top of the 12th to give the Brewers a 3-2 lead, three outs from a sweep and a first World Series title. Pratt finished with four hits, the first rookie with a four hit game in a World Series clincher situation.

The bottom of the 12th unravelled for Milwaukee. Junior Caminero reached on a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz, Liam Hicks singled, and Jonny DeLuca ripped a single up the middle off reliever Shane Drohan to score pinch runner Cedric Mullins and tie the game. Chandler Simpson singled to load the bases, and pinch hitter Ben Williamson ripped the walk-off hit into right field. Drohan did not record an out in the inning.

We have tomorrow. We have a new day. We have life.

That was Yandy Diaz in the Rays clubhouse after the win, and it captures the shift. Sports Illustrated reported the Brewers had been three outs from completing one of the most dominant postseason runs in history, having swept their league championship series and taken the first three games here. Instead they lost for the first time since October 6, snapping an eight game winning streak, and their only two defeats this postseason have both come by one run.

World Series 2026 Game 5 Preview: What Decides It

The first question is Milwaukee’s bullpen. It carried the Brewers through the postseason and finally cracked in the 12th inning of Game 4, with Drohan unable to finish a game the clubhouse expected to celebrate. How manager Pat Murphy redistributes the late innings in Game 5 is the tactical story of the night. A rested, trusted arm in the ninth is the obvious adjustment, but the Rays have now seen every high leverage reliever Milwaukee has.

The second question is Tampa Bay’s belief. The Rays twice took early leads in Game 4 off starter Dustin May, who allowed two runs in three innings, and twice Milwaukee answered against Griffin Jax. Chandler Simpson drove in the game’s first run, Caminero’s pressure on the bases created the fourth inning run, and the lineup kept producing traffic late. A team that was outplayed for three games found its identity in the fourth: pressure, contact, and chaos on the bases.

The third factor is Pratt himself. The rookie shortstop has been Milwaukee’s best player in this series, and Tampa Bay has to decide whether to pitch around him in leverage spots. Four hits and a go-ahead extra inning home run in a potential clincher is the kind of performance that changes how a pitching staff plans an entire game.

The Stakes On Wednesday Night

For Milwaukee, Game 5 is still a closeout game, and the math remains heavily in its favour. No lead in this series has been safe, but a 3-1 advantage with two more chances after tonight, if needed, is the position every club would choose. The Brewers are in their first World Series appearance in 44 years according to the Milwaukee Courier, and the wait for a first title now runs through at least one more night in Florida.

For Tampa Bay, the path is narrower and simpler. Win tonight and the series goes back to being a contest, with the pressure moving fully onto the team that nearly swept. Lose, and a remarkable survival story ends as a footnote. The Rays have life, in Diaz’s word, and Game 5 at Tropicana Field will decide whether that life becomes the start of a comeback or the last stand of the 2026 season.
