Tyler EARFQUAKE Video Revisited

By NoExcu$e

Tyler, The Creator released EARFQUAKE with the album IGOR on May 17, 2019, and the video arrived the same day, so the tyler earfquake video meaning talk show opening is most viewers’ first memory of the era. Tracee Ellis Ross, playing host Pearl Edwards, introduces a guest in a blue suit and a blonde wig who answers her questions with a bleeped name and a single word: yes.

That guest is Igor, the character Tyler built the album around. He takes the stage, sings at a piano, and dances while the set slowly catches fire from his own cigarette. Playboi Carti’s verse arrives as the flames spread, Tyler collapses with burns, then returns dressed as a firefighter to put out his own performance before the camera shakes, falls, and cuts the broadcast off.

Watch The Video

Tyler directed the video himself, as he did across the IGOR campaign. The talk show frame is a joke with a point: a polite daytime format trying to contain a performer and a song that keep overheating, until the set itself gives up.

The Song Tyler Nearly Gave Away

EARFQUAKE was written for other voices first. Tyler originally wrote the song for Justin Bieber, who turned it down, and he also had Rihanna in mind for the hook before deciding to keep his own raw, pitched up vocal. That choice defines the record: the lead vocal sounds exposed and slightly unstable, which suits a song about begging someone not to leave.

Carti’s verse is mixed low and half buried, a famous production decision that made listeners lean in. Background vocals come from Charlie Wilson and Jessy Wilson, giving the track a soul spine under the wobbling synths. Tyler set the terms for the whole album in a note posted before release:

“Don’t go into this expecting a rap album. Don’t go into this expecting any album. Just go, jump into it.”

Chart Peak And Grammy Context

Released to rhythmic radio as a single on June 4, 2019, EARFQUAKE peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, Tyler’s highest charting single at the time, and it has since been certified multi Platinum in the United States and passed one billion Spotify streams in August 2024. IGOR debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, his first chart topping album, and won Best Rap Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards, despite Tyler’s own warning that it was not a rap album in any simple sense.

The video’s afterlife is part of the story. The Pearl Edwards interview, the burning piano and the firefighter return became the most shared images of the campaign, and the Igor wig and suit became a Halloween level costume, a rare feat for a video with no dance routine and no guest star performance on camera.

The album context matters for scale. IGOR was written, produced and arranged entirely by Tyler, and it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 165,000 first week units, the first chart topping album of his career after a decade of cult scale releases. Billboard ranked EARFQUAKE at No. 14 on its list of the 100 Best Songs of 2019, and the track’s official remix by Channel Tres, released October 4, 2019, underlined how far the song travelled beyond rap radio into dance and alternative playlists. A love song first offered to two of the biggest singers on earth had become, in its author’s own strained falsetto, the record that moved him from headline act to album chart topper.

Why The Talk Show Frame Endures

The video works because it stages the song’s emotion as a public performance going wrong. Igor smiles for the host, performs for the cameras, and literally burns down around his own feelings, then has to clean up the mess himself. That is the album’s love story in three minutes, told without a single scene of the person he is singing to.

Revisited now, EARFQUAKE’s video is the moment Tyler’s directing caught up with his production: one set, one character, one escalating gag, and a song that turned a rejected demo into his biggest single of the era.
