Tate McRae released Greedy as a single on September 15, 2023, with the official video arriving the same day, and the tate mcrae greedy video hockey concept is the whole pitch in one image. A Calgary singer with a dance background takes over an empty rink after hours and treats the ice like a stage.
The video was directed by Aerin Moreno and choreographed by Sean Bankhead. McRae performs on the ice in hockey gear touches, rides a Zamboni, leads her dancers through the arena, and at one point works out in the locker room area, all shot on film. It is a confident, funny visual that uses her home province iconography without a single word of explanation.
Watch The Video
McRae has said Greedy was the first video where she felt she had full creative input, from styling and lighting to how it was shot. The Zamboni idea came from a conversation with her creative director in a matcha shop, and two weeks later the crew was filming it, which explains the loose, playful tone.
A Hockey Arena As A Pop Stage
The arena setting does three jobs at once. It grounds McRae in Calgary, where she grew up and where hockey is a default backdrop. It gives a trained dancer a huge, unusual floor to command, with boards, glass and empty seats as scenery. And it separates Greedy instantly from every bedroom and city street video in pop that year: nobody else was doing choreography on ice.
“I wrote greedy about having the confidence to know what you want. I feel like this is the first time where people are seeing a feistier and more playful side of me.”
Tate McRae, in the RCA Records release announcement, September 2023
That confidence is the song’s subject as well. Greedy was written by McRae with Amy Allen, Jasper Harris and Ryan Tedder, and produced by Tedder, Harris and Grant Boutin. McRae told Billboard the song scared her in the studio because it sounded so new for her, and that getting past that fear set the direction for the whole Think Later album.
The Chart Run That Followed
Greedy became her first Hot 100 top 10 and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, while topping the Canadian Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. It was the lead single from Think Later, released December 8, 2023, and it won Single of the Year at the 2024 Juno Awards, where McRae also won Artist of the Year.
The teaser strategy mattered too. McRae previewed the song live in Philadelphia on September 14, 2023, the night before release, and the crowd already knew the words from her online snippets. The video then gave that early audience a visual worth sharing, and the song kept climbing for months rather than peaking in week one.

The album around it landed just as hard. Think Later debuted inside the top five in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Belgium and Norway when it arrived on December 8, 2023, a global footprint that Greedy’s chart run had promised. Inside the video itself, small choices keep rewarding attention: the Zamboni lap that turns arena machinery into a throne, the locker room workout sequence played completely straight, and Sean Bankhead’s choreography, which treats the ice as a floor like any other and never once plays it safe. McRae began her career as a competitive dancer, the first Canadian finalist on So You Think You Can Dance as a teenager, and Greedy is the video where that training and her pop career now occupy the same frame.
Why This Video Marked A Turn
Before Greedy, McRae’s public image leaned toward the sad songwriter of You Broke Me First. The arena video announced a different artist: a dancer first, in control of concept, styling and choreography, building a pop persona on camera. Every McRae video since has worked in the space this one opened.
Revisited today, Greedy plays like a debut all over again, which is what a lead single video is supposed to do. The rink was empty, but the statement was full volume.
