Tate McRae Breaks Own Spotify Debut Record

By NoExcu$e

Tate McRae scored the biggest Spotify debut of her career this week, as “Housewife” opened at No. 1 on the Daily Global Spotify Chart with 5.671 million first-day streams. The Calgary-born singer did not just set a personal best. She lapped it, clearing the previous mark by more than a million and a half plays and putting a Canadian name on top of the global streaming chart in the middle of the busiest release month of the year.

The Numbers Behind the Record

The scale of the debut is what makes the story. “Housewife,” released October 15 through RCA Records, pulled 5.671 million global streams in its first 24 hours on Spotify. McRae’s previous best opening belonged to “Tit for Tat,” the deluxe edition single that opened at No. 5 on the same chart with 4.13 million streams. The new single beat that figure by more than 1.5 million plays, a jump of roughly 37 percent, and it did so after nearly a full year without new music from McRae.

The momentum carried across platforms. The official “Housewife” video collected 2.7 million views on YouTube in its first day, the single climbed into the top three on the US iTunes chart, and McRae ranked as the 25th most-streamed artist on Spotify worldwide on October 16. Early projections reported this week have the song tracking toward a Top 5 debut on the Billboard Hot 100, with the official ranking set to publish on October 26.

Her First Global Topper Since Greedy

The No. 1 landing carries a second distinction. “Housewife” is McRae’s first song to top the Daily Global Spotify Chart in more than three years, dating back to the run of “Greedy” in 2023. That song, the lead single from her second album Think Later, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 and turned McRae from a rising Canadian export into a fixture of global pop. She now has two songs that have reached the top of Spotify’s global daily chart, one from each of her last two album eras.

The gap between those two chart-toppers tells its own story. In between, McRae released So Close to What, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in February 2025 with 177,000 album-equivalent units, the biggest debut week for a studio album by a woman in five months at the time. Its deluxe single “Tit for Tat” debuted at No. 3 on the Hot 100, her third Top 10 hit on that chart, and her Morgan Wallen duet “What I Want” gave her a first Hot 100 No. 1 earlier that year. Few artists anywhere, let alone from Calgary, have stacked a run like that before turning 24.

A Song About a Woman Who Can’t Be Contained

McRae has been clear about what the song is doing. Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 7, the night she announced the single, she described its subject in one line that has framed the whole rollout:

“A woman who can’t be contained.”

The song, co-written with Julia Michaels and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder alongside Grant, Aaron Shadrow and El Guincho, flips its title on its head. The chorus has McRae singing about making her own money and being her own housewife, a framing that treats a partner as a choice rather than a necessity. The video, directed by Pierre-Ange Carlotti and filmed in the South of France with choreography by Sergio Reis, pushes the same idea visually, all sun-drenched estates, yacht decks and a baby carriage filled with cash. Fans had actually been staring at the title for months without seeing it. The word “Housewife” flashed on screen at the start of her Lollapalooza headline set on August 2, an Easter egg hiding in plain sight.

Where the Run Stands Now

Zoom out and the debut week sits inside a much larger picture. According to RCA and Sony Music Canada, McRae has now accumulated more than 29 billion career streams. She has won two MTV Video Music Awards and three consecutive Artist of the Year titles at the JUNO Awards. Her Miss Possessive arena tour, which wrapped last November, ran beyond 80 dates and sold more than one million tickets according to her label. She has also launched her debut fragrance, TATE 01, in the middle of it all.

“Housewife” is the lead single from her fourth studio album, which has no title or release date yet. If the first week is the measure, the new era is not easing in. A personal streaming record, a first global Spotify topper in three years and a projected Top 5 Hot 100 debut is the kind of opening that turns a comeback single into the starting gun for an album cycle. The official Hot 100 news lands October 26, and for a singer from Calgary who started out posting dance videos, the ceiling keeps moving up.
