Shawn Mendes released his fourth studio album Wonder on December 4, 2020, through Island Records. This shawn mendes wonder album deep dive monster guide revisits a 14 track record built in stillness, written after years of nonstop touring and released with a Netflix documentary alongside it.

The album debuted at number one in Canada and the United States, giving Mendes his fourth consecutive chart topping album. Three singles carried the rollout: the title track Wonder, Monster with Justin Bieber, and Call My Friends, and the first two both reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100.

Shawn Mendes Wonder Album Deep Dive Monster: The Singles

The title track arrived first, on October 2, 2020, and peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. It opens the album after a short Intro and sets the tone for everything that follows: big questions about love, fame and identity, sung over swelling production that builds from a quiet verse into a wide open chorus. Mendes co-wrote the song with Scott Harris, Kid Harpoon and Nate Mercereau, and the official video, directed by Matty Peacock, puts him on a moving train, in a forest and on a cliff above the sea.

Monster followed on November 20, 2020, pairing Mendes with fellow Canadian Justin Bieber for the first time on record. The song reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Canadian Hot 100, and the two performed it live for the first time at the 2020 American Music Awards. Mendes later explained the song had been written three years earlier, during a period when he felt pressure about how the public framed his relationships. Call My Friends, released the same day as the album, closed the singles run with a more reflective look at distance from the people closest to him.

It really feels like a piece of me has been written down on paper and recorded into song. I tried to be as real and as honest as I have ever been.

That line comes from the handwritten style letter Mendes shared with fans when he announced the album on September 30, 2020. It is the clearest statement of intent in the whole Wonder era, and the record works hardest when it lives up to it.

The Tracks That Hold The Album Together

Beyond the singles, Wonder rewards a front to back listen. Higher and Teach Me How To Love bring the energy up early, with Teach Me How To Love leaning into a funkier groove than anything on his earlier albums. 24 Hours and Dream sit at the romantic centre of the record, short and direct songs written from inside a new relationship. Song For No One slows everything down to voice and guitar, while Piece Of You experiments with a heavier, synth driven sound. Look Up At The Stars works as the emotional peak near the end, and Cant Imagine closes the album the way Intro opened it, quietly and alone at the piano.

Production across the album was handled by Mendes with Kid Harpoon, Frank Dukes and Scott Harris among the key collaborators. The sound is deliberately bigger than the self titled 2018 album: layered backing vocals, live drums and long reverbs give the record a stadium scale even though most of it was written in lockdown conditions. Mendes has said the quiet of quarantine in Miami gave him room to reflect, and that stillness is audible in the sequencing, which alternates widescreen moments with near whispered ones.

Where Wonder Sits In The Mendes Story

Wonder was preceded by the Netflix documentary Shawn Mendes: In Wonder, released November 23, 2020, and a concert film from his Rogers Centre show in Toronto. The album era also set up the Wonder World Tour, which began in Portland in June 2022 before Mendes paused and later cancelled remaining dates to focus on his health, a decision he spoke about openly. Readers following his earlier eras on iimiTV can revisit Shawn Mendes Opens Illuminate Vault For Anniversary for the album before this period, and the Canadian connection on Monster leads naturally to Bieber Drops Surprise Album SWAG II.

Nearly six years on, Wonder reads as the turning point between the teen pop star of Handwritten and the adult songwriter Mendes has become. It is not a reinvention so much as a widening: the hooks are still there, but the questions underneath them got bigger. For a first full listen, play the singles in order, then run the album front to back and finish with Cant Imagine, the quietest and most honest three minutes on the record.
