Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 7-3 in ALCS Game 6 at Tropicana Field on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026.

The win took the series 4-2 for the American League pennant, and Tampa Bay opens the World Series on Friday, Oct. 23 at 8:00 pm ET in Milwaukee, where neither franchise has ever won a championship.

Peralta Delivers The Pennant And The MVP Award

Freddy Peralta allowed one run in five and a third innings in Game 6, closing a series that defined the ALCS. Across three appearances, Peralta allowed one run over 12 innings, with nine strikeouts and six walks, and he was named ALCS MVP. Those numbers explain why Cleveland never found a sustained answer. One run in 12 innings across a championship series means every Cleveland rally started from a deficit of confidence as well as runs, and Game 6 followed the same pattern, with Tampa Bay scoring first and keeping control of the tempo.

Peralta kept his own reaction short after the clincher:

“This is crazy. I’m very happy to be here, to be part of this great group and this organization.” Freddy Peralta, Tampa Bay Rays, ALCS MVP, published by theScore (according to the Associated Press)

There is a personal layer to the final ahead. Peralta now faces Milwaukee, the team he spent his first eight seasons with, on its home field in Game 1. That storyline needs no exaggeration. The ALCS MVP will open a World Series against his former club, in the building of the team that posted the best record in baseball, and he will do it as the pitcher who just carried Tampa Bay through the American League bracket.

Early Runs, Late Homers, And One Eighth Inning Escape

Richie Palacios opened the scoring with a two run double in the second inning, and Jonny DeLuca added a sacrifice fly in the third, giving Tampa Bay the early cushion that shaped the night. Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz each hit two run home runs late, with Diaz connecting in the eighth, stretching the lead at the point Cleveland was trying to build one final push. The Guardians did score twice in the eighth and loaded the bases, but Kevin Kelly struck out Brayan Rocchio to leave them loaded, ending the threat that could have changed the game.

Bryan Baker retired the side in order in the ninth to finish the pennant. It was a fitting close for a series Tampa Bay controlled in different ways across six games, with starting pitching in some, timely power in others, and relief work at the highest pressure moment in Game 6. Cleveland’s eighth inning will be remembered as the last real opening: bases loaded, the tying pressure building, and one strikeout that kept a three run game from becoming a tie game in a single swing.

A First Time Champion Is Now Guaranteed

This series reached this point through a long week. Our coverage of the game that put Tampa Bay ahead is in Rasmussen Leads Rays Past Guardians Again, and the series began very differently in Guardians Rally Past Rays In ALCS Opener, where Cleveland won Game 1 by the same 7-3 score. Tampa Bay answered that opener by winning four of the next five, a turnaround built on run prevention and enough power at the right moments, ending Monday night with a pennant at home.

Milwaukee swept Los Angeles in the NLCS, clinching on Oct. 15, so both clubs arrive with a clear identity and a long wait finally over. Milwaukee has not reached a World Series since 1982, and Tampa Bay has lost both of its previous trips, in 2008 and 2020. One of them will win a first title in the coming days. For Canadian fans with the Blue Jays home, this is the October series to adopt: two franchises, zero championships between them, and a Friday night opener in Milwaukee to start it.
