My Chemical Romance Earns First UK Number One

By No Excuse
Share

My Chemical Romance has earned its first UK number one album, twenty years after The Black Parade first reached number two. The Official Charts Company confirmed the result on Friday, October 30, closing a two-decade wait for Gerard Way, Ray Toro, Frank Iero and Mikey Way.

The timing could hardly be sharper. The album’s twentieth anniversary edition arrived on October 23, exactly twenty years after the original release, and the band plays the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Friday and Saturday night. A record that defined a generation of rock fans now sits on top of the British chart for the first time in the band’s career.

My Chemical Romance First UK Number One Took Twenty Years

The Official Charts Company put the finish line plainly on Friday: “Now, two decades on, they finally go one better. The Black Parade gets the Number 1 its legacy deserves.” The Black Parade displaced Fontaines DC’s Dopamine Chamber, which falls to number two, ahead of Olivia Rodrigo’s You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love at three, the twentieth anniversary reissue of Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black at four and Michael Jackson’s The Essential at five.

The midweek numbers showed how the win was built. Music Week reported the reissue leading the first sales flash with 13,395 sales, of which 12,702 were physical copies. This was not a streaming accident. Fans bought the record again, on physical formats, twenty years after they first marched with it, and the Official Charts Company’s final chart on Friday confirmed the midweek lead had held.

It is the first time any My Chemical Romance album has topped the UK chart, and Kerrang! noted the result arrived sixteen years after the band last released a full body of work. The group broke up in 2013 and reunited in 2019, and the anniversary campaign has run like a victory lap: a world tour playing the album in full, stadium dates across Britain and now the chart finish the album missed the first time around.

The Album That Stopped At Number Two In 2006

The Black Parade was released on October 23, 2006, on Reprise Records and produced by Rob Cavallo. It is a concept album built around The Patient, a man dying of cancer who watches his life pass as a macabre parade, and it moved the New Jersey band from emo leaders to full theatrical rock. It first charted in Britain in November 2006 and peaked at number two, kept off the top by Robbie Williams’s Rudebox, on its way to 73 weeks on the UK chart.

The singles told the same story of a band at its commercial peak. “Welcome to the Black Parade” gave the band a UK number one single and held the top for two weeks, while “Famous Last Words” and “Teenagers” followed it into the top ten conversation of the era. The band’s other top ten albums, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge and Danger Days, never reached the summit, which is why Friday’s result closes a gap that has sat in the band’s British chart history for twenty years.

The “Welcome to the Black Parade” video, directed by Samuel Bayer, remains the album’s defining image: The Patient leaves his hospital bed and joins the parade itself. The clip was voted the greatest music video of the century in a 2017 MTV poll, and the song itself passed seven times platinum in the United States in 2025, a reminder that the album never really left the culture while it waited for its chart moment.

The Black Parade Twentieth Anniversary Edition Release Date And Bonus Tracks

The twentieth anniversary edition was released on Friday, October 23, 2026, twenty years to the day after the original album, through Reprise Records. The reissue adds six bonus tracks: three live recordings from the band’s Maxwell’s show in Hoboken on October 24, 2007, and three B-sides that longtime fans have traded for years, “Heaven Help Us,” “Kill All Your Friends” and “My Way Home Is Through You.” James Jean, the illustrator behind the original cover, returned with new artwork for the edition, extending the world of Pepe, the skeletal parade leader on the sleeve.

That package explains the shape of the chart win. Anniversary reissues compete on devotion, and few fan bases have kept a record alive the way this one has. The Black Parade spent years as a rite of passage for new rock fans, its songs passed down through older siblings, reunion shows and anniversary tours. When the band gave those fans a definitive edition, with live recordings from 2007 and artwork from the original illustrator, the audience showed up in the first week in numbers a new release would envy.

The race carried one neat symmetry. Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black, another defining album of 2006, returned at number four with its own twentieth anniversary reissue, so two records from the same autumn twenty years ago shared the top five again. This time, the parade finished first.

The Parade Plays Hollywood Bowl This Weekend

The chart news lands in the middle of the band’s own celebration on stage. My Chemical Romance has toured The Black Parade in full since mid-2025 on the Long Live The Black Parade run, including stops in Liverpool and Glasgow and three nights at Wembley Stadium this past summer. The band is in the middle of a Hollywood Bowl residency in Los Angeles for Halloween, with shows on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, before the run continues to Asia in November.

That makes Friday a rare double. The band will walk on stage in Los Angeles hours after learning the album they are playing, in full, is the number one album in Britain for the first time. Few anniversary tours get a finish that clean. Twenty years after Rudebox kept The Black Parade at number two, the parade has reached the top of the chart at last, and it arrives with the band still marching.
