Matthews Reaches 800 Points Fastest Ever

By Rin

The Calgary Flames beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 at the Scotiabank Saddledome on October 26, and Auston Matthews still left the building with a franchise record. His third period assist on William Nylander’s goal was the 800th point of his NHL career, reached in 703 games, faster than any player in Maple Leafs history.

The milestone came at 6:06 of the third period, a primary assist that pulled Toronto within a goal and briefly opened the door to a comeback. Calgary closed it with two empty net goals, ending the Leafs’ four game winning streak and beating Toronto for the first time since February 10, 2022, after eight straight Leafs wins in the matchup. The result and the record now sit in the same box score, which is often how milestones work in October.

Matthews 800 Points In 703 Games

The number that will follow Matthews is 703. Darryl Sittler, the previous franchise record holder, reached 800 points in 742 games in 1980. Matthews got there 39 games sooner, and he is only the fourth player in franchise history to record 800 points with the club. Among United States born players, he is the second fastest to 800 career points, behind Pat LaFontaine, who did it in 664 games.

The season line explains the pace. Matthews has nine goals and 11 assists in 14 games, a point in four of his last six outings, and points in all but two games this season. He entered the night on 799 points after scoring in the 7-2 win at Edmonton that opened this four game road trip, so the record was a matter of one more play. Nylander’s goal, his fifth straight game with a point, supplied it.

Gridin And The Flames Take The Night

Calgary earned the win on the ice. Matvei Gridin scored twice, picking the top corner on Sergei Bobrovsky’s short side in the first period and adding a power play goal 25 seconds into the second. Mikael Backlund, back after missing two games with an upper body injury, also scored in a first period burst of two goals less than two minutes apart that put Toronto down 2-0. Joel Farabee and Martin Pospisil added the empty netters, Farabee also recording an assist, while Matt Coronato had two assists. Devin Cooley made the key stops as Calgary won its fourth straight game.

Easton Cowan scored Toronto’s other goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Troy Stecher and Morgan Rielly, extending Cowan’s point streak to four games. Rielly has points in four straight, Jack Roslovic’s assist stretched his streak to four games, and Stecher has points in three straight. Toronto went 0 for 2 on the power play and 5 for 6 on the penalty kill, and won 59 percent of faceoffs, numbers that describe a competitive game rather than a collapse. The Leafs also lost Kirill Marchenko in the second period after he went into the boards on a hit from Yegor Sharangovich, a development worth watching before Wednesday.

What The Record Says About This Era

Milestones like this one are really arguments about eras. Sittler’s mark stood for 46 years, through every great Leafs scorer since, and Matthews passed it while still in his twenties and still adding to a season that has him above a point per game. His most productive year remains 2023-24, when he scored 69 goals and 107 points and won his third Rocket Richard Trophy. The 800 point club in Toronto is small because the franchise asks its stars to carry history as well as offence, and Matthews now sits in it with room to climb.

The club he joined explains the weight of the number. Only Mats Sundin, Darryl Sittler and Dave Keon had reached 800 points as Maple Leafs before Monday, three names that between them define most of the franchise’s modern history. Matthews passed Börje Salming’s total on the way here and now chases Keon next, with Sundin’s franchise record of 987 points sitting at the top of the list. At his current pace, that record is a matter of seasons, not decades. Monday also carried a smaller piece of history: it was Toronto’s final visit to the Scotiabank Saddledome, which closes after this season as Calgary prepares its new arena, so the record was set in a building the Leafs will not play in again.

Toronto, 7-5-2 and third in the Atlantic Division, continues the road trip Wednesday against the Seattle Kraken. Calgary, winners of five of its last six after an 0-5 start, visits Edmonton the same night. The Leafs lost the game and the streak, but the captain’s record is the line from this box score that will still be in the record book next season, and the season after that.
