FINAL: Manchester United 3, Roma 2

Manchester United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Matheus Cunha scored twice in under three minutes late in the second half, then was sent off in stoppage time, as United ended a nine-game winless run and gave manager Michael Carrick a lifeline on a night that had looked lost inside 17 minutes.

Two Down Inside 17 Minutes

Roma scored twice before United had settled, and both goals exposed the same open left side. In the 11th minute, Rodrigo Mora switched play with one long diagonal pass to the unmarked Matias Soule, who took a touch and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner past Senne Lammens. Six minutes later Soule was free in the same area, and his shot struck the outstretched arm of Ayden Heaven. Donyell Malen converted the penalty, firing past Lammens, who dived the wrong way. Opta recorded it as the earliest any visiting team has ever scored twice at Old Trafford in major European competition.

The rest of the first half offered United little relief. Malen had a low drive palmed away by Lammens, and a Soule curler skimmed the outside of the left post on the stroke of halftime. United were booed off, and the frustration in the stands spilled into a brief stoppage when supporters threw tennis balls onto the field, alongside chants calling for the club’s owners, the Glazer family, to sell. Roma had arrived short-handed, with first-choice goalkeeper Mile Svilar out and backup Pierluigi Gollini hurting his back hours before kickoff, so third-choice Devis Vasquez made his club debut in goal. For 45 minutes, the debutant was barely tested, as United produced only 0.24 expected goals before the break.

Manchester United Roma 3-2: The Turn In Three Goals

United’s route back opened just before the hour, after an early second-half blow when Carlos Baleba pulled up with a hamstring injury. Cunha won a penalty from a tangle with Gianluca Mancini, and the night briefly got worse: Vasquez saved Bruno Fernandes’s first attempt. The kick was retaken because Roma players had encroached, and Fernandes blasted his second attempt in at the 58th minute, his 50th penalty for United and his 44th conversion. A minute later Bryan Mbeumo hit the inside of both posts, and Roma captain Bryan Cristante cleared off the line, but the momentum had fully changed. United racked up 10 second-half shots worth 2.48 expected goals, while Roma did not manage a single sight of Lammens’s goal after halftime.

The equaliser came in the 83rd minute, when Leonardo Balerdi missed his attempted clearance of a Fernandes cross and Cunha, hovering behind him, turned the ball in from close range. Three minutes later Cunha struck again, putting his laces through a tight-angled effort on the right of the box to beat Vasquez at his near post. He whipped off his shirt and leapt into the crowd in celebration, and that booking cost him: in the 91st minute he received a second yellow card for a late tackle on Balerdi and was sent off. The 10 men held on. Youri Tielemans summed up the dressing room view after the whistle: “We just kept working, we kept believing. We were on the front foot in the second half, we tried to push them into their goal and we succeeded.” He added, of Carrick: “There has been a lot of pressure on him and that’s how we repay him, with a comeback like this, big character, big fight.” United’s own account marked the result on X with two words: comeback complete.

A Comeback That Writes Two Records

The numbers behind the turnaround are why this result travels beyond one league-phase matchday. No team has won more Champions League games from two or more goals behind than Manchester United, whose fourth such win ties Real Madrid’s record. It was also United’s first win from two goals down at halftime since October 2021, when they beat Atalanta 3-2 at Old Trafford, and Atalanta were managed then, as Roma are now, by Gian Piero Gasperini. United have now won both of their last two Champions League home matches in which they trailed by two or more goals, both against Gasperini sides.

Roma’s side of the ledger is a historic first, and not one they wanted. Both of Roma’s Champions League defeats this season have come after leading by two goals, following last month’s 4-3 loss to Real Madrid, and Opta records Roma as the first team in European Cup and Champions League history to lose two games from that position in the same season. The Italians have also now lost on all five of their visits to Old Trafford. Malen’s scoring run offered their one consolation: since his Roma debut in January he has scored 27 goals in all competitions, and only Harry Kane, with 39, has scored more for a club in Europe’s big five leagues in that period. Fernandes, for his part, had failed to score with his previous 18 shots before the retaken penalty, and Cunha’s brace took him to six direct goal involvements this season, four goals and two assists, the most of any United player.

What The Win Means For Carrick And United

The result ends a run of nine games without a victory across all competitions, three draws and six defeats, stretching back to a 4-0 win over Sabah on September 10, a span of 54 days. In the league phase standings, United move up to 17th place with two wins and two defeats from four matches, while Roma sit two points behind them in 19th. The win breathes life into a Champions League campaign that had taken back-to-back defeats against Atletico Madrid and Como, but it comes with costs. Cunha’s red card rules him out of United’s next Champions League fixture, away to Sporting CP on November 25, and Baleba’s hamstring injury adds a fresh concern in midfield.

For Carrick, the comeback is a stay of execution rather than a verdict. He went into the night under heavy pressure, with reporting before kickoff framing this game and Sunday’s Premier League visit of Aston Villa as the two matches that would shape the club’s decision during the November international break. A manager who was perhaps 45 minutes from the end at halftime left the pitch to applause instead. Whether the second half against Roma becomes a turning point or a reprieve depends on what follows on Sunday, but for one night at Old Trafford, a team that had forgotten how to win produced the kind of comeback the club’s European history is built on, and matched a record held by Real Madrid in the process.
