Lions Host Roughriders In West Semifinal

By No Excuse
Share

The BC Lions host the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL West semifinal on Saturday, October 31 at BC Place in Vancouver, with kickoff at 4:30 p.m. ET. Both teams finished the regular season 10-8, BC is favoured by 6.5 points, and the winner advances to face the first place Edmonton Elks in the West final on November 7.

It is a preview of a win or go home playoff game, and it carries a recent history. This is the third straight year the Riders and Lions meet in the postseason, and Saskatchewan won the last two meetings, including a 24-21 West final win last year.

Defending Champions Embrace The Underdog Role

Saskatchewan arrive as the defending Grey Cup champions and as the clear underdog in this game, a combination their locker room is using openly. Linebacker Jameer Thurman set the tone this week in comments reported by the Regina Leader Post.

Ain’t nobody picking us to win this game. People in Regina aren’t picking us to win this game. So I’m not worried about any of that. We just worry about us. We focus on us right now. That’s it.

The Riders case is not built on sentiment. Quarterback Trevor Harris led the league with 5,370 passing yards and threw 32 touchdowns this season, and the 40 year old is chasing his fourth Grey Cup triumph. Saskatchewan steadied a late season slide that included a four game losing streak by closing with a 16-12 win over Montreal and a 16-9 victory over a resting Edmonton squad to secure their playoff place.

There is a cost on defence. Starting safety Nelson Lokombo has been ruled out with a hip injury, and Jaxon Ford starts in his place. Saskatchewan does get field halfback DaMarcus Fields back from a hamstring injury, and leading receiver KeeSean Johnson returns from an ankle injury, giving Harris his top three targets together again.

BC Earned Home Field In This Matchup

The Lions earned this home game the direct way. After dropping their season opener in Regina 31-27, BC beat Saskatchewan twice in Vancouver, 30-16 and 31-24, to win the season series and the tiebreak at identical 10-8 records. BC rallied from a poor start to win nine of their final 12 games.

Lions defensive coordinator Mike Benevides framed the week plainly in comments reported by The Province.

We were fortunate to come away with two victories against Saskatchewan, but it’s a brand-new series now. They’ve got a Hall of Fame quarterback and a physical running game. We’ve got our hands full, but it should be a ton of fun and I’m grateful that we’re playing in our house.

Quarterback Nathan Rourke passed for 4,614 yards and 24 touchdowns for BC this season, and running back Zander Horvath led the league with 18 rushing touchdowns while gaining 894 yards at 4.9 yards per carry. BC will be without weak side linebacker Parker McKenna, ruled out with a head injury, and starting field cornerback Stantley Thomas Oliver, who tweaked a hip in practice, with veteran Garry Peters starting in his place. Nose tackle Jonah Tavai returns from a thigh injury.

Third Straight Playoff Meeting

The recent playoff history favours Saskatchewan, and BC knows it. The Riders beat the Lions in the West semifinal in 2024, then beat them again in the West final in 2025, when Harris threw a 3 yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds left for a 24-21 win on the way to the Grey Cup.

That history is why home field and the regular season series only count for so much on Saturday. BC has the form, the building, and two home wins over this opponent in 2026. Saskatchewan has the quarterback with the biggest passing season in the league, a defence that closed the season with two low scoring wins, and a recent habit of ending BC season in November.

The winner gets Edmonton on November 7, with a place in the 113th Grey Cup on November 15 in Calgary on the line in that final. The loser season ends in Vancouver on Saturday night. Between a favoured home team chasing its first win in this playoff matchup in three tries and a defending champion comfortable being doubted, the West semifinal is the second half of a CFL playoff doubleheader that begins earlier Saturday in Toronto, and it is built to be close.
