Four Goals In 2:06: The Winnipeg Jets Record Comeback

Montreal controlled the scoreboard for 57 minutes. Owen Beck opened the scoring in the first period on a wrist shot built by the Canadiens fourth line, and Josh Anderson made it 2-0 late in the period with a backhand finish, his seventh goal of the season. Cole Caufield pushed the lead to 3-0 early in the second period with his first career goal against Winnipeg, the only team that had never allowed him one in 12 previous meetings. His third period power-play goal, his 10th of the season, made it 4-0 and put him on a 56-goal pace.

The strange part was that the run of play never matched the score. Winnipeg outshot Montreal 30-14 through two periods, and Jacob Fowler, the NHL Rookie of the Month for October, had to be perfect to hold the lead. Fowler came in with seven straight wins since losing his first start of the year on October 8, and through 40 minutes he had stopped everything. The third period even brought a heavyweight fight between Arber Xhekaj and Tyrel Bauer, the kind of moment that usually closes a home win out.

Then the game flipped in 2 minutes and 6 seconds. Bauer started it at 17:21 of the third period, cutting the lead to 4-1. Morgan Barron scored at 18:03 to make it 4-2. Kyle Connor scored with the extra attacker at 19:00, and 27 seconds later Connor scored again at 19:27 to tie the game 4-4. Sportsnet recorded the burst as the fastest four goals in Jets franchise history. In overtime, Samberg took passes from captain Adam Lowry and Gabriel Vilardi and scored on a snap shot with 1:30 left, his only shot on goal of the night, to complete the 5-4 win.

Why This Comeback Stands Alone In NHL History

Comebacks from four goals down are rare on their own. This one began later than any other. No team in NHL history had ever won a game after trailing by four goals with under three minutes left in regulation, which is what made the Bell Centre finish a record and not just a wild night. Winnipeg finished with a 47-22 edge in shots on goal. Fowler made 42 saves in the loss, while Stuart Skinner stopped 18 of 22 shots at the other end and still came away with the win.

The context made it heavier. Winnipeg arrived at 4-8-3, winless in nine straight games at 0-7-2 since October 15, with five of those losses coming by one goal. The skid had bottomed out on Sunday in a 7-0 loss at the Carolina Hurricanes. Montreal arrived at 9-3-2 on a five-game winning streak, and the Canadiens had already beaten the Jets 2-1 in the Heritage Classic in Winnipeg on October 25, then won three more games in a row after it. On form, this was the league’s hottest home team against a visitor looking for any sign of life, and for 57 minutes the form book was right.

The Spark Samberg Asked For Before Puck Drop

The Jets had spent two days talking about exactly the thing that finally happened. “You want to get off to a good start and get the lead early. Obviously not every game is going to be that way,” Samberg said before the game. “For us, it’s just, maybe it might be scoring the first goal. We need something to ignite that spark and get us going.” Winnipeg did not score first, and did not score at all for 57 minutes, but the spark arrived from the whole bench when it came. Head coach Scott Arniel had framed the ask the same way: “If everybody plays their role, we’ll be okay. That’s what I’m continuing to harp is be the best version of yourself.”

The box score backs him up. Connor led the push with two goals on eight shots in 27:50 of ice time, taking his total to 13 goals in 16 games. Barron added a goal, an assist and six shots. Bauer finished with a goal and an assist to go with his fight. Mark Scheifele and Dylan DeMelo each had two assists, and Cole Perfetti, who had said before the game that the group had to stick together through the frustration, logged six shots in 21:03. The Jets official postgame show, with interviews from the players and Arniel, is below.

What The Result Means For Both Clubs

For Winnipeg, one win does not erase a nine-game skid, but the way it arrived changes the trip home. The Jets closed their four-game road trip with the kind of result that can reset a room: the captain set up the winner, the star winger tied the game in the final minute, and the depth players started the rally. Instead of a 10th straight loss and harder questions, they fly home with proof that the push they kept describing was real.

For Montreal, the loss is a point kept and a lesson handed out at home. The Canadiens still took a point from a game they led 4-0, Caufield reached 10 goals with two power-play goals, and Slafkovsky added two assists. But Fowler’s seven-game winning run is over, the five-game team winning streak is over, and the collapse came despite a power play that scored twice in four chances, while Winnipeg’s went 1 for 5. Montreal stays home to face the Utah Mammoth on Thursday, carrying a finish it will not want to repeat.

Records are usually set by teams playing their best hockey. The Jets set this one at the lowest point of their season, down four goals, on the road, with 2:39 left. That is why this finish will travel: the latest four-goal comeback win in NHL history belongs to a team that had forgotten how winning felt, right up until the last three minutes in Montreal.
