dvsn ‘Between Us’ Lyrics Meaning

By WrdPly

dvsn released “Between Us,” featuring Snoh Aalegra, on March 19, 2020 as a single from A Muse In Her Feelings, the album that followed on April 17, 2020 through OVO Sound and Warner Records. The dvsn Between Us lyrics meaning turns on one request, sung by two voices: remove everything standing between two people who have already decided.

The song is a catalogue single, explained as catalogue. It began as an earlier dvsn record, was rebuilt with a guest who changed its balance, and sits on the most guest-heavy album the Toronto duo have made. The lyric is short and direct, which is exactly why it rewards a close read.

dvsn Between Us Lyrics Meaning Starts With In Between

The first version of this song arrived on July 10, 2019, when dvsn released two singles on the same day: “Miss Me?” and “In Between.” “Miss Me?” made the album tracklist. “In Between” did not, at least not in its original form. Rebuilt and retitled as “Between Us,” it returned on March 19, 2020 with Snoh Aalegra added, and the rebuild changed the song’s meaning in a practical way: a solo plea became a conversation, with both sides of the distance answering each other.

That structure is the song. Daniel Daley opens the case, Aalegra answers it, and the chorus states the shared position in plain language:

“I don’t want nothing in between us / Nothing there to stop the feeling.”

There is no puzzle in the words, and the song does not pretend otherwise. The writing works by repetition and placement: the title phrase loses its first word, “in,” as the record moves from describing a problem, something in between, to demanding an outcome, nothing between us. The distance in the song is never named. It could be pride, timing, other people or the gap between what two people say and what they do, and the lyric leaves every one of those readings open on purpose.

The Usher Sample Under The Plea

The production makes the argument before the voices finish it. “Between Us” is built around Usher’s “Nice & Slow,” and its writing credits tell that story on paper: alongside Daley, Paul Jefferies and Snoh Aalegra, the song credits Usher Raymond, Jermaine Dupri, Brian Casey and Manuel Seal Jr., the team behind the 1997 original. Nineteen85 and Joe Reeves produced the dvsn record, with additional production from Amorphous, and the sample is not decoration. It places a new Toronto duet inside a lineage of slow R&B confessions that Aalegra and Daley both grew up hearing.

The official video, directed by Brendan Vaughan and shown above, stages the same idea visually: two performers in separate frames and separate rooms, singing toward a connection the camera keeps almost granting. Revolt, premiering coverage of the visual in April 2020, framed it as a song about infidelity and temptation. The lyric supports that tension without settling it. Nothing in the words confesses a betrayal; what the words confess is impatience with whatever is keeping the two singers apart.

Two Voices, And An Album Opening Outward

“Between Us” landed in the middle of a deliberate widening. dvsn explained the shift behind A Muse In Her Feelings to GRM Daily in terms of showing range rather than changing identity:

“I don’t think our sound so much evolved in that time frame. I think what we did was we started showing the people some of the things we were already doing.”

The album around the single proves the point. A Muse In Her Feelings runs 16 tracks with guests including Future on “No Cryin,” PartyNextDoor on “Friends,” Jessie Reyez on “Courtside,” Popcaan on “So What,” Summer Walker on “‘Flawless’ Do It Well Pt. 3” and Ty Dolla $ign and Buju Banton on “Dangerous City,” released April 10, 2020. It debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the Top R&B Albums chart, and Rated R&B placed it No. 8 on its 30 best R&B albums of 2020. A deluxe edition, Amusing Her Feelings, followed on January 15, 2021, adding a collaboration with Miguel.

Why The Song Still Gets Searched

Listeners keep looking up this lyric because the song says a complicated thing in uncomplicated words, and because the duet form lets both people be right at once. Daley’s verses carry the insistence, Aalegra’s answers carry the condition, and the chorus is where they agree. Released March 19, 2020, “Between Us” is dvsn at their most direct: no distance, no decoration, and a classic sample holding the door open between two voices until neither one is singing alone.
