Dalian Yingbo beat Tianjin Jinmen Tiger 3-1 on Sunday, November 8, 2026, to win the Chinese Super League title for the first time. The championship was only theirs when Chengdu Rongcheng lost 3-2 at Shandong Taishan, completing a collapse that had looked impossible five rounds earlier.

FINAL: Shandong Taishan 3, Chengdu Rongcheng 2

Reuters reported the final-day results and the head-to-head tiebreaker that separated the two clubs: both finished on 52 points, and Dalian took the trophy because they beat Chengdu twice this season. It is, as the 2026 Chinese Super League table now records, a first title for Dalian, and it was won in snow, in front of a packed Dalian Suoyuwan Football Stadium, by a club that did not exist five years ago.

A Final Day That Swung For Seventy Minutes

Dalian started the day three points behind Chengdu, knowing only a win gave them a chance. They led after four minutes and 26 seconds through Yang Mingrui, and for most of the afternoon the live table moved with events 1,000 kilometres away in Jinan, where Chengdu were playing Shandong.

Chengdu were two goals down inside 23 minutes, Raphael Merkies scoring on 15 minutes and Guilherme Madruga on 23. Felipe Silva pulled one back with seven minutes left in the first half, and when Xadas levelled for Tianjin from the penalty spot on 50 minutes, Chengdu were champions again in the live standings, even while losing their own match, because Dalian suddenly needed another goal.

Cryzan restored Shandong’s two-goal lead on 63 minutes, which left Chengdu hoping Tianjin could hold on. Liao Jintao scored from the edge of the area on 70 minutes to put Dalian back in front, Wellington Silva made it 3-2 for Chengdu on 79 minutes, and one more Chengdu goal would have taken the title back. It nearly came in the third minute of added time, when Wang Ziming’s close-range shot was deflected over the bar. Instead, Huang Shan scored from three yards in the fourth minute of stoppage time in Dalian, and the title was settled.

How The Chinese Super League Title Lead Disappeared

The numbers explain why this finish will be remembered. Football360’s account of the run-in records that Chengdu led by 14 points with five rounds to play, a lead the BBC and Reuters accounts put at 12 points entering the final four rounds. Chengdu took one point from those last five matches. Dalian took all 15.

Chengdu drew 0-0 with Henan, then lost four straight: to Tianjin, to Shanghai Port, to Dalian, and finally to Shandong. The penultimate round was the clearest warning. At home to Dalian, needing only a draw, Chengdu missed a first-half penalty, failed to score from 12 shots, lost 1-0, and saw a hopeful 90th-minute equaliser from Hu Hetao disallowed by VAR. A side that opened the season with a 12-game unbeaten run, 11 wins and a draw, and that had led the standings from the opening day, surrendered top spot for the first time all season on the last day of it.

The comparisons write themselves, and the reporting has already made them: the collapse has been set alongside Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United giving up a 12-point lead to Manchester United in the 1995-96 Premier League season. Asian football journalist John Duerden, quoted by Football360, put it plainly: “Leading by 14 points with five games to go, Chengdu’s collapse is of historic proportions.” He added that Chengdu had produced “one of the most dramatic stories in recent Asian football history.”

Chengdu also finished with the better goal difference, plus 15 against Dalian’s plus five. It counted for nothing, because the Chinese Super League separates level teams on head-to-head results first, and Dalian won both meetings, 2-0 in May and 1-0 in October.

A Club Founded In 2021 Reaches The Top

Dalian’s side of the story is as remarkable as Chengdu’s. The club was founded on 24 December 2021 as Dalian Duxing, took the Dalian Yingbo name in January 2024, and climbed the divisions in consecutive seasons, reaching the Chinese Super League for the 2025 season. Less than five years after the club was founded, and in only its second top-flight season, it is the champion of China.

The run-in was built on five straight wins while Chengdu froze, and the squad had a clear match-winner across the season: Ghana international Frank Acheampong finished the campaign with 12 goals and four assists for Dalian. The coaching staff also carried an Australian thread on the winning side, with former A-League head coach Mark Rudan serving as an assistant.

What The Title Changes Next

The title sends Dalian into the league phase of the 2027-28 AFC Champions League Elite as China’s champions. Chengdu, who would have taken that direct place with a single point from their last four matches, instead go into the group stage of the second-tier AFC Champions League Two.

For Chengdu manager John Aloisi, in his first overseas head-coaching role after taking charge at the start of 2026, the ending was raw. His comments after the match, translated and reported by Football360, were an apology first: “We are indeed very disappointed not to have won the championship. We are in a very despairing state. There is nothing else to say. I want to say sorry to everyone. We certainly know that our fans have travelled a long way to fight alongside us and support us. Right now, my only feeling is one of great dejection and disappointment, because we could see the trophy right in front of us, but could not get it.”

Asked about resigning, Aloisi refused to discuss his future on the night: “Now is not the time to talk about this. As a team, together with the club and everyone, we need to review where we fell short in our past five matches.” That review will cover the most dramatic season in the league’s recent history, one that began with nine of the 16 clubs carrying points deductions after a corruption crackdown, and ended with a 14-point lead, five winless matches, and a first-time champion crowned on head-to-head in the snow.
