Crosby Sets Single-Franchise Assists Record

Sidney Crosby set the NHL record for assists with one franchise on Saturday night at the Bell Centre, recording his 1,112th career assist on Erik Karlsson’s power-play goal against the Montreal Canadiens. The Sidney Crosby assists record came in a 5-4 Canadiens win, Montreal’s fifth straight, on a night when the record book and the scoreboard pulled in opposite directions.

FINAL: Montreal Canadiens 5, Pittsburgh Penguins 4

How to watch: Pittsburgh Penguins vs Montreal Canadiens, Saturday, October 31, 2026, 7:00 p.m. ET at the Bell Centre in Montreal

The Penguins marked the moment on their official account as soon as it happened: “With his 1,112th career helper, Sidney Crosby has the most assists with one franchise in NHL history.” Sportsnet carried the play live as Crosby teed up Karlsson on the power play: watch the record assist here.

Sidney Crosby Assists Record Passes Bourque At 1,112

The record fell 2:08 into the game. Karlsson teed up a one-timer on the power play to open the scoring, Crosby drew the primary assist, and a mark that had stood for a generation changed hands. Ray Bourque recorded 1,111 assists over 21 seasons with the Boston Bruins, the most any player had ever produced for one team. Crosby, 39 and in his 22nd season with Pittsburgh, passed him on a power-play feed in Montreal, then added a second assist before the first period was ten minutes old to push the new record to 1,113.

The single-franchise list explains why this record is so hard to reach. Wayne Gretzky is the career assists leader with 1,963, but he never passed 1,086 with one team, his Edmonton Oilers total. Steve Yzerman sits at 1,063 with the Detroit Red Wings, and Mario Lemieux recorded 1,033 with Pittsburgh, so the Penguins are the only franchise with two players in the top five of a list that measures staying power as much as playmaking. Crosby tied Bourque a week earlier, on October 24, when his assist on Rickard Rakell’s late tying goal forced overtime in a 3-2 win over Nashville. He went without an assist in Thursday’s loss to Utah, so the record waited for the Bell Centre, where the crowd had already given him a warm ovation when he was announced in the starting lineup before the anthems.

Crosby was not done climbing on Saturday. His second assist, on Tommy Novak’s goal at 7:28 of the first period, and his late goal gave him a three-point night and 1,771 career points, tying Marcel Dionne of Drummondville, Quebec for sixth on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. His 1,113 assists sit seventh all time, 22 behind Paul Coffey, and Novak’s secondary assist on the Karlsson goal was the 100th of Novak’s own career. Karlsson’s three-point night also moved him to 951 career points, tenth among defencemen in NHL history.

Anderson Scores Twice As Montreal Answers Every Push

Montreal’s answer to the record took less than a minute, then arrived in bursts all night. The Canadiens replied to Karlsson’s opener with two goals 24 seconds apart. Oliver Kapanen beat Sergei Murashov between the legs at 2:41 for his first goal in 24 games, regular season and playoffs combined, after Owen Beck found him on the rush. Josh Anderson then picked off Hendrix Lapierre’s breakout pass and ripped a shot into the top-right corner. Novak tied it 2-2 at 7:28, finishing a three-on-two rush led by Crosby, and the teams traded four goals inside the opening eight minutes.

The second period followed the same script, only faster. Alexandre Texier put Montreal ahead 3-2 at 1:54, beating Murashov with a deke after a slick behind-the-back pass from Lane Hutson. Twenty-seven seconds later Chris Kreider followed his own rebound for his second goal of the season and a 4-2 lead. Rakell replied at 3:45, beating Jacob Fowler glove side after Karlsson knocked down a clearance, but Anderson restored the two-goal margin when his deflection of a Hutson point shot bounced off Murashov and defenceman Kris Letang and in. Anderson finished with two goals and an assist, Kreider with a goal and an assist, and Hutson with two assists. Crosby pulled Pittsburgh within one with 3:11 left in regulation, shovelling home a rebound with the goalie pulled, but the Penguins could not find the equalizer. Pittsburgh outshot Montreal 29-27, Murashov stopped 22 shots in the loss, and the defeat dropped the Penguins to 5-7-2.

Fowler Wins Seventh Straight In A Streak Built Without Suzuki

The win carries its own milestone in the Montreal net. Fowler made 25 saves and became the third Canadiens rookie goaltender in the past 40 years to win seven consecutive games. Montreal (9-3-2) returned home from an undefeated four-game Western road trip and stretched its winning streak to five, all of it without captain Nick Suzuki, who missed his fifth straight game with a hand injury but appeared close to returning after joining the optional morning skate. Veteran defenceman Mike Matheson, out two weeks with a lower-body injury, and forward Kirby Dach, who was sick, also missed the game.

The depth showed up in the middle of the game. Beck, called up from the AHL in Suzuki’s absence, landed a hard hit on Penguins defenceman Kaedan Korczak midway through the second period and then fought Blake Lizotte in his first NHL fight. Kapanen, Anderson and Texier supplied goals from beyond the top of the lineup. This is a Canadiens team winning in layers right now, and Saturday it absorbed a record-setting night from the most decorated visiting player in the league and still kept its streak intact.

One Franchise, Twenty-Two Seasons, And Still Climbing

The context around the record is what makes it singular. Crosby has spent all 22 of his NHL seasons with the Penguins, the team that drafted him first overall in 2005, and he is playing alongside Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin in a 21st consecutive season together, the longest run for a trio on one team, a group that recorded its 494th win together on September 30. Last season he surpassed Lemieux for the most points in franchise history, a record Lemieux held at 1,723, and he has scored at better than a point per game in every season of his career. In 2025-26 he recorded 74 points, 29 goals and 45 assists, in 68 games.

By his own standard, this season has opened slowly, and Saturday began with Pittsburgh at 5-6-2 and Crosby with seven points in 13 games. The record arrived anyway, because records of this kind are not built in a month. They are built by a player from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia who never changed sweaters, producing for two decades through contention windows and rebuilds alike. Both teams play again on Tuesday: the Penguins host the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Canadiens host the Winnipeg Jets, with Fowler a win away from extending his run to eight and Crosby, now the standard for assists with one franchise, 22 assists behind Coffey on the all-time list and tied with Dionne on the points list with the next names in front of him.
