Antonelli Becomes Youngest Formula 1 Champion

Kimi Antonelli became the youngest champion in Formula 1 history on Sunday, November 1, finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix to clinch the 2026 drivers’ title. At 20 years and 68 days, the Mercedes driver broke a record that had stood for 16 years.

FINAL: Max Verstappen (Red Bull) wins the Mexico City Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) second, Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) third at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Antonelli arrived in Mexico City needing only a ninth-place finish, worth two points, to close the championship with four races still to run. He did far better than the minimum. Starting fourth after a grid penalty for Verstappen moved him up from fifth in qualifying, he ran fourth for much of the 71 laps and took third place, 15 points, and a podium shared with Verstappen and Hamilton, two of the most successful drivers the sport has produced. His championship lead over Hamilton now stands at 121 points with a maximum of 100 left on the table, which makes the title mathematically final.

Kimi Antonelli Youngest F1 Champion: The Records He Broke

The headline record is the age. At 20 years and 68 days, Antonelli takes the youngest champion mark from Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first title for Red Bull in 2010. The gap is more than three years, the largest single jump the record has ever taken, and it lands in only Antonelli’s second season in Formula 1.

The rest of the history stacks up just as fast. Antonelli is the 36th different driver to win the Formula 1 drivers’ championship, the fourth to do it for Mercedes, and the third Italian champion in the sport’s history. The second part is the one Italy has waited on: Giuseppe Farina won the first title in 1950 and Alberto Ascari followed in 1952 and 1953, and no Italian had won it since. Sunday ended a 73-year drought, the longest gap between champions from one country in the championship’s history, and Antonelli ended it at less than half the age Farina was when he won.

He also clinched early. The title was decided after 19 rounds with the races in Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi still to come, and he did it the week after admitting the expectation was getting to him. “I’ve been a bit more tense than usual, especially when you keep hearing, wherever you go, any time of the day, the same thing,” Antonelli told reporters on Saturday, after a week in which illness, including a fever on Thursday, had already disrupted his preparation.

A Chaotic Race Behind A Calm Title Drive

The race around him was anything but calm. Hamilton started from pole for Ferrari, but his teammate Charles Leclerc challenged into the opening corners, cut across the grass at Turn 5 and took the lead, collecting a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Verstappen, starting fifth on medium tyres while the other leaders ran softs, was second by the end of the first lap and jumped Leclerc at the first pit stops.

The race then broke apart. A heavy crash for Valtteri Bottas brought out a red flag and a stoppage of around 40 minutes, in a race that also ran through two Safety Cars and a Virtual Safety Car. Verstappen led the standing restart, held off Hamilton’s late pressure and won by 0.7 seconds, his third victory of the season and the 74th of his career. Antonelli passed Leclerc for third shortly after the restart, and Leclerc, who flat-spotted his tyres at the restart, held on to fourth ahead of Lando Norris. George Russell’s frustrating day included a 10-second penalty on his way to sixth, ahead of Oscar Piastri, Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson, who started from the pit lane and still scored in ninth, and Pierre Gasly.

Through all of it, Antonelli’s drive was the quiet one the championship required. He needed two points and collected 15, finishing on the podium in the race that made him champion rather than limping home in the position the maths allowed.

The Season That Made The Title Inevitable

Mexico was a coronation because the season had already done the work. Antonelli won five of the opening six races of 2026, took his first Formula 1 victory in China in March at 19, becoming the second-youngest race winner in the sport’s history, and reached Mexico with nine wins from 18 races and 365 points. His most remembered drive came at home: at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza he won from 19th on the grid, the first Italian winner of his home race in six decades.

The speed of the rise is the context that makes the record believable rather than freakish. Antonelli replaced seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for 2025, scored three podiums and 150 points as a rookie, and then dominated his sophomore season from the front. After winning in Austin a week ago, he was already looking past the finish line: “It would be really cool to wrap things up and become the next champion. But winning the title would be just the beginning,” Antonelli told the media after the United States Grand Prix.

Born In A Garage, Champion At 20

The BBC’s profile of the new champion, published as he closed on the title, traces the story back to his father’s racing team. Marco Antonelli, a former GT racer and team owner, told the BBC: “From the time Kimi was 15 days old, he has been in the garage with me. He was raised to the sound of engines and the smell of exhaust fumes.” The family stories have become part of the driver’s folklore: a driving simulator at three years old that he would not leave, and, at seven, being smuggled into the Formula 1 paddock at Hockenheim hidden in a stack of tyres under an umbrella because he was too young to be allowed in.

Born in Bologna on August 25, 2006, and named with Kimi Raikkonen in mind, Antonelli races with the number 12 as a tribute to his idol Ayrton Senna. Mercedes signed him to its junior programme at 12, he swept the Italian and German Formula 4 titles in 2022 and won in Formula Regional in 2023, and the team fast-tracked him straight into the seat Hamilton vacated.

Four races remain in the 2026 season, and they are now a victory lap for a champion who still cannot rent a car in some countries. The fight behind him is for second place, where Hamilton, Russell, Verstappen and Leclerc arrived in Mexico covered by nine points. At the front, the question has changed. It is no longer whether a 20-year-old can win the Formula 1 world championship. It is how many more he wins from here.
