Anderson .Paak and Cordae Drop ‘A Good Day’

By NoExcu$e

Anderson .Paak and Cordae have released “A Good Day,” the lead single from their first full collaborative album. Heavy Is the Crown arrives October 23, the payoff of a partnership that began with 2019’s “RNP.”

A Soul Sample at the Center

“A Good Day” arrived September 16 via APESHIT plus EMPIRE and Hi Level plus Mass Appeal, and it wastes no time announcing what this album is. The track is built around a sample of Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day,” the kind of warm, instantly recognizable soul foundation that invites a rapper to rise to the occasion. Cordae does, keeping his verses grounded and hungry over a drum-driven groove, while .Paak brings his trademark melodic delivery and rhythmic phrasing, sliding between singing and rapping like few artists in the game can.

The record carries a few more fingerprints worth noting. It includes ad-libs from the late Fatman Scoop, a presence that instantly places the song in hip-hop’s lineage of celebratory party records. And the title tips its hat to Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day,” one of the most beloved feel-good records in rap history. The references are not accidents. .Paak and Cordae are planting their flag in a specific tradition: rap music that makes you feel good without asking you to think less.

That balance is the whole bet of Heavy Is the Crown. Polished production, serious bars, and clear respect for the generations that came before, delivered by two artists at very different points in their careers who share a genuine musical language.

A Video That Tips Its Hat to Friday

The “A Good Day” video, directed by Dave Meyers and starring Jennifer Freeman, pays homage to the 1995 film Friday, casting .Paak and Cordae as brothers competing for the same love interest. Meyers is one of the most decorated video directors in music history, and the concept plays directly to the duo’s chemistry: playful, competitive, and clearly having a great time.

The Friday nod is doing real work here. The film is a touchstone of nineties Black comedy, a story about an ordinary day made memorable by the people in it. Mapping that energy onto a song called “A Good Day” is a sharp creative choice, and it tells you how the two see themselves. They are not positioning this album as a heavyweight summit. They are positioning it as two friends who genuinely enjoy making music together.

That looseness is deceptive. The video’s period detail and sight gags sit on top of a record that is meticulously arranged, from the Withers flip to the Scoop ad-libs. The fun is the point, but it is executed with precision.

Seven Years of Chemistry

This collaboration has been building for a long time. .Paak and Cordae first linked in 2019 on “RNP,” a standout from Cordae’s debut album The Lost Boy that became a fan favorite and a live staple. They followed it with tracks including “Two Tens” and “Summer Drop,” plus a string of high-profile performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and the BET Awards, among others.

Clash Magazine, covering the album announcement back in August, noted that the album artwork nods to the cult film Step Brothers, and described the friendship it captures as one “rooted in genuine creativity, but with an irreverence, too.” That irreverence is the throughline of everything they have done together. These are two artists who take the music seriously and themselves lightly, a rarer combination than it sounds.

The album’s label structure reflects how far both have come. It arrives via APESHIT, .Paak’s imprint, alongside EMPIRE, Cordae’s own Hi Level, which he founded in June 2021, and Mass Appeal. Ownership has been a core part of Cordae’s public identity since he launched Hi Level, and releasing the biggest collaboration of his career through his own label, rather than a major, is a statement in itself.

Vinyl, Cassettes, and a Marvel Comic

The rollout for Heavy Is the Crown goes well beyond the streaming services. The single arrived with six retailer-exclusive vinyl variants, plus an animated zoetrope edition available direct to consumer, and cassette and CD editions featuring a lenticular cover that shifts into an image of .Paak and Cordae mid play-fight. It is a physical campaign built for collectors, and it suggests the album is being treated as an event, not just a playlist entry.

Then there is the Marvel connection. Mass Appeal turned its NYC Comic Con 2026 presence into a showcase that includes a special edition Heavy Is the Crown comic collaboration from .Paak and Cordae, with a Whatnot-exclusive variant cover by celebrated Japanese comic artist Peach Momoko. In the announcement, Mass Appeal said: “We’re excited to be back this year with Whatnot and share some of the new projects we’ve been creating with Marvel.” A hip-hop album getting its own Marvel comic treatment puts .Paak and Cordae in rare company, and it underlines how this project is being positioned at the center of culture, not just music.

The Crown Arrives Friday

October is a crowded month for releases, but few projects carry this one’s backstory. Seven years after “RNP,” two of the most technically gifted artists of their respective generations are finally making the full-length record their chemistry always promised. “A Good Day” sets the tone: soulful, sharp, and unbothered by trends.

Heavy Is the Crown is out October 23. If the single is any indication, the crown fits.
